Ingredients for a Thankful Life – Day 2

Let joy be your continual feast.

1 Thessalonians 5:16 TPT

Joy is fruit that comes from the Holy Spirit when we rest in God's presence and glean hope from his word. It's feeling of good cheer and happiness dependent on who God is rather than who we are or what's happening around us.

Joy is a choice, and it can be difficult when life feels heavy. Looking around at today's economic crisis and constant division, depression and anxiety are at all-time highs. When our world is rocked, and we find ourselves enduring challenges we never thought we'd experience, just getting out of bed can be a battle. We're left feeling defeated, deflated and unsure how we'll make it through. It takes strength and intentionality to choose joy. How do we create happiness for ourselves when what's around us feels like anything but? Giving brings joy: a life of serving others does just as much good for us as for those we serve. If we get more joy out of giving, we can put thought into what we're able to give. We can also choose joy by filling ourselves with God's truth. It's important to stay connected to God and to grow in our walk with him. We can commit to reading our bibles daily, reading books to develop our spiritual lives and listening to worship music.

What's flowing out of your heart today? One indicator is to listen to how you're speaking. Is it negative self-talk and critical words? Are you tasting bitter, juicy, spicy, dry or salty? Then, consider how you might cultivate the right ingredients to bring out God's flavor. The world is full of substitute food, but God's word is healing -- just the right seasoning for a delicious meal. Consider writing declarations for yourself out of God's word: If God is for me, who can be against me? I am more than a conqueror through Jesus who gives me strength. No weapon formed against me shall prosper. Fear is not from God! The joy of the Lord is my strength! Feast on joy today and fill yourself with God's truths, so he can become your strength.
